ARTIST STATEMENT
These drawings and paintings were started as part of a daily practice during the period of Lent. This transformative time was chosen not for self-denial, but to find the kernel of something lost, and nurture it like a found seed. They are in a way, a reflection of the emotions of the day they were made, something simmering just below the surface of thought. They have told me interesting things.

Nicole Michaud struggles with depression and complex PTSD from childhood sexual trauma and emotional abuse. It presents in her daily life of trying to be a good companion and mother. She wants better for her own life, for her daughter’s life and for her husband, and sometimes cries from the strain of it. She wants to be held while she screams.
